StoryWalk™

StoryWalk™ / FAQ
Can you exercise and read with your family at the same time?

Thanks to StoryWalk™, the answer is a definite yes! The pioneering project is the brainstorm of volunteer Anne Ferguson. Combining physical activity and literacy may seem like an odd mix, but in collaboration with Kellogg-Hubbard Library, StoryWalk™ has taken off locally and is now being picked up by towns across Vermont.

Pages from a book are posted at stations along your route. As you walk, you are directed to the next page in the story.

Although StoryWalk™ features children's literature, it's not just the kids who are enjoying the stories. "I'm a guy and I'm 55 and you totally made my day", wrote one StoryWalk™ reader, "I'm sure this was intended for little kids but this 'big kid' loved the treat." Thanks to support from Bear Pond Books, the Vermont Humanities Council, and the Vermont Bicycle and Pedestrian Coalition, StoryWalk™ has been at the North Branch Nature Center, Hubbard Park, the Montpelier Bike Path, First Night, and in stores in downtown Montpelier. If you have an idea for a StoryWalk™ location, please contact
.

StoryWalk™ comes to RENO
Reno Parks, Recreation & Community Services Department has added children's stories to the pathways at Canyon Creek and Manzanita parks for walkers to enjoy. Known as StoryWalks, they are growing in popularity across the U.S. At Canyon Creek Park in Northwest Reno, Halloween Rescue (Go, Diego, Go!) was installed, and at Manzanita Park in Southwest Reno, the book is What's Hatching?

StoryWalk™ comes to Arsenal and Filippello parks in Watertown.

StoryWalk™ this summer, Bear Snores On was at The Somers Library in Somers, NY.
"It has been such a pleasure to receive all the positive feedback from our patrons."- Betsy Bishop, Children's Librarian

"Summit Street School in Essex Junction hosted a "Children Love Books Literacy Fair" in March and highlighted StoryWalk™ as one of our activities. We had a table with information about StoryWalk™ and where folks could find them locally. We set up a StoryWalk™ on our school grounds using Tracey Campbell Pearson's Myrtle. TCP signed books and gave a reading at the fair also. Our school is in the process of fundraising for a playground renovation. We are hoping to create a natural playground and look forward to having StoryWalk™s on our grounds in the future. Thanks for such a wonderful idea!"

StoryWalk™ in Laconia, NH!
The Laconia Parks and Recreation Department and the Laconia Public Library are offering youngsters a chance to get fit while "reading" popular children's books. Read about it here in The Citizen of Laconia.

StoryWalk™ is making the rounds, 2007.

StoryWalk™ is featured in the New England Park Association Summer newsletter called, The NEPA Exchange, in an article written by Brian Kaplan, Assistant Recreation Coordinator at the Stowe Recreation Department. Brian borrowed one of our StoryWalk™ books to put on the Stowe Recreation path. The Massachusetts Recreation and Park Association Review, another newsletter, touts StoryWalk™ as "a great new program idea from Vermont". The Tarrywile Park in Danbury, CT is interested in installing StoryWalk™ in their park. In Vermont, StoryWalk™ is making the rounds at various libraries: Gossie, with French subtitles, just came back from Derby Line, The Dot is due to come back from the Mad River Valley, another StoryWalk™ book, If You Give A Pig A Pancake visited Cavendish.

Blue Cross/Blue Shield, a StoryWalk™ grantor, took Sheep on a Hike to family days at Shelburne Farms on August 23, to Hildene Mansion on August 24 and then set up a walk at the Brattleboro Memorial Health Fair on September 6. Also there was an hour-long presentation about StoryWalk™ at the Burlington Book Festival on Sunday, September 14, 2008
