A Brief History of PoemCity
In 2010, Rachel Senechal was inspired by poems she saw hanging in the Waterbury library for National Poetry Month in April. She began to think about how to bring something like that to the Kellogg-Hubbard Library, where she was the program coordinator. As she began to get storefronts and poets involved she was joined by Phayvahn Luekhamhan, then on the promotions committee of Montpelier Alive. POETRY Alive! was born.
When Rachel retired from the library in December 2020, after over a decade of coordinating programs and working on development, PoemCity had grown from 90 poems to nearly 400 poems that were accepted and ready for display for PoemCity 2020.
Thirteen years, one name change, and one pandemic later, PoemCity has displayed a total of nearly 4,500 poems by Vermonters, hosted 350 readings, and 45 poetry and art exhibits (20 dedicated to the poetry and art of children). Of course, what can’t be counted are how many poems have been read, enjoyed, and been an inspiration to others.
Extra thanks goes to participating poets and downtown businesses who act as hosts for the hundreds of PoemCity poems. PoemCity isn’t possible without them or the sponsorship from the National Life Group Foundation, the Vermont Humanities Council, the Hunger Mountain Co-op, and the Vermont College of Fine Arts. I feel lucky to live in Vermont a lot, but especially in April.
